Non-convertible currency refers to a currency that is not easily exchanged or traded on forex markets. One reason that a nation may choose to make its currency into a non-convertible currency is to prevent a flight of capital to offshore destinations.

However, currencies such as the Brazilian real, Argentinian peso, and Chilean peso are considered non-convertible because it is virtually impossible to convert them into another legal tender, except in limited amounts on the black market.

The Chinese yuan (CNY) is a well known non-convertible currency. Convertible debentures are debentures that can be converted into equity of the company. In case of non-convertible debentures, they cannot be converted into equity shares of the company.

Some currencies, such as the North Korean won, the Transnistrian ruble, and the Cuban national peso, are officially nonconvertible and can only be exchanged on the black market. If an official exchange rate is set, its value on the black market is often lower.
