Validity of a Permit After a building permit has been issued, there are different time requirements based on the area. However, it is a standard form that if work is not started or completed within six months of the permit's date, the permit must expire.

General Contractor Change - A notarized letter signed by the owner addressed to the Commissioner of Department of Buildings is required to inform the Department of a change in General Contractor. The letter must reference the permit address and the permit number.

Because an issued permit cannot be re-opened to make changes, the original applicant shall apply for a new permit that shows the new scope of work or a change of contractor. Once the permit reviews are complete and payment is made, a new placard will be issued that will supplement the existing permit placard.

To apply for a permit, applicants must submit a permit application signed and notarized by the owner or owner's representative and a registered contractor. For an owner-builder permit, only the owner is required to sign and notarize the application.

A completed Building Permit Application (yellow form): Indicate the permit number to be extended. Select ?Extension? under ?Change to an Existing Permit? section.
