Bates numbering, also known as Bates stamping, is a method of sequentially numbering pages. It's especially useful for situations involving a large number of documents, such as indexing medical records, business receipts, or in legal preparation.

Choose Tools > Edit PDF. The Edit PDF toolset is displayed in the secondary toolbar. In the secondary toolbar, choose More > Bates Numbering > Add. In the Bates Numbering dialog box, click Add Files, and choose Add Files, Add Folders, or Add Open Files.

Bates Stamping: This procedure assigns a Bates stamp to the lower right corner of a document. The Bates prefix is specified with at least one letter and up to six letters and sequential numbering with seven digits, starting 0000001, unless otherwise instructed at or prior to time of job commencement.

If you set the start page number to 1000, then a citation on page 1 of the document will appear as "at 1000", a citation to page 2 will appear as "at 1001", and so on. Second, you can add a prefix to the citation. This is very common when documents are Bates labeled. Page 1 may be stamped as "DEF00001".

For example, if XYZ company produces 25,000 pages to an opponent, it may Bates number the production "XYZ_000001 - XYZ_025000." Some lawyers refer to Bates numbers as Bates stamps because at one time the numbers were physically stamped on each page.

While the original Bates stamps only used numbers (up to a maximum of 9999), there is no set format for Bates numbering. It may be purely numeric or alphanumeric. Either way, Bates numbering is essentially a paper-based method, most useful for printed productions or page-based images.

In the Edit PDF toolbar, click More > Bates Numbering > Add. In the Bates Numbering dialog box, click Output Options. Select the radio button for Add to original file names and enter %BATES_NUMBER_KEY% in the Insert Before or Insert After fields as desired. Click on the OK button.
