As a quick reference, the passing scores on the UBE range from a 260 to 280 (out of a potential 400 points). For more details on the passing score for each jurisdiction, be sure to check out UBE Passing Scores by State. Okay, okay.

You want to aim for a scaled score of at least 140-145 (which is the average score). Ideally, you should want a 150+ scaled score to have confidence to pass the exam. The national average MBE scaled score for the last two exams was: 134.0 6 in Feb. 2019; and 139.5 7 in July 2018.

As you can see from the map, the lowest UBE score is, as of now, 260. The highest UBE score is a 280 (required in Alaska). The most common score is a 266, with major states like New York and DC requiring this score. It is possible to technically pass the Uniform Bar Exam in one jurisdiction and fail it in another.

Average scores The average raw score from the summer exam historically has been about 128, or about 67% correct (only 175 of the 200 questions are scored with the remaining 25 questions being evaluated for future use), while the average scaled score in 2007 was about 140.

The MPRE is scored on a 50 to 150 scale, with the mean scaled score calculated to be around 100, depending on the difficulty of the examination. More recently, however, the mean scaled score has been 93.1 (2016), 95.0 (2015), and 93.6 (2014).

MPRE scores are typically released to examinees within five weeks from the date of the examination. Scores will be posted to your NCBE Account File Cabinet. Scores remain available in your NCBE Account File Cabinet only until the next test administration.

A passing MPRE score is valid for four years from the date the applicant sat for that MPRE.

Note that many law schools and bar review courses say that a score of approximately 32 correctly-answered questions will lead to a score of approximately 85. Our general recommendation is that if you are scoring between 30 and 35 on most practice exams, you are in the passing range.

Passing score The highest required by any state is 86 (Utah and California. All states have a window either preceding or surrounding the bar exam outside of which MPRE scores are not recognized.

These are the approximate scores you want to aim for in order to have a passing MBE score: If you are aiming for a MBE converted score of 131-135 (which is a passing score in most jurisdictions that require scores of 262-270 to pass), you should aim for 58%-62%. We suggest aiming for at least 60% to be safe.

The percentage needed for a passing MBE score in California is 67.5%. This means an MBE score of approximately 119 raw (119/175) is passing. A raw score of 119 should equal a scaled score of 144. Keep in mind, California uses a thousand-point scale.

The 175 scored questions on the MBE are distributed evenly, with 25 questions from each of the seven subject areas: Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts. Each of the questions on the MBE is followed by four possible answers.

For the July 2017 bar exam, the national average MBE score was 141.7. If you take the bar exam in a UBE jurisdiction, it is easy to figure out a passing MBE score. Take the score you need to pass and divide by two. If your jurisdiction requires a 266 out of 400 to pass, then a 133 is a passing MBE score.
