A referral is the process or steps taken by a teacher in order to get extra assistance for a student with whom they directly work. In most schools, there are three distinct types of referrals: referrals for disciplinary issues, special education evaluations, and counseling services.

RTI is a method to determine if a child has a specific learning disability and is eligible for special education.

Response to Intervention (RtI) is an approach that schools use to help all students, including struggling learners. The RtI approach gives Texas students opportunities to learn and work at their grade level. The idea is to help all students be successful.

If you have already requested a special education evaluation in writing, the school district CANNOT delay an individual evaluation because interventions have not been implemented. RtI is NOT required to occur before a referral is made/evaluation is started.

RTI Referral Process Referring teacher obtains the RTI Referral Form. Referring teacher completes the form in detail and returns it, along with the pertinent records, to the RTI Coordinator in referring teacher's building.

A student who needs additional support in sentence structure can receive feedback from the teacher in the form of a lesson. For example, suppose your student composes using run-on sentences. RTI examples include: breaking down the teaching into micro-units; showing examples; using alternate modalities of learning.
