The Willamette Valley contains most of Oregon's population; it extends from the Portland metro area in the north to Eugene in the south.

Oregon Pinot Noir pioneer David Lett of Eyrie Vineyards first planted Pinot Noir in Oregon in 1965, and several other growers followed suit throughout the 1970s. In 1979, Lett took his wines to a competition in Paris, known in English as the Wine Olympics, and they placed third among pinots.

There was Peter Britt, who in 1854 established the Northwest's first winery. Then came Richard Sommer in 1961 who started Oregon's first post-prohibition winery in the Umpqua Valley.

The Willamette Valley, Oregon's oldest wine region, has two-thirds of the state's wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 700 wineries. Framed by the Coast Range to the west and Cascades to the east, it is recognized as one of the premier winegrowing regions in the world.

Grapes were first planted in the Oregon Territory in 1847 by Henderson Luelling, a horticulturist who traveled to the territory on the Oregon Trail.

The history of Oregon wine production stretches back to before the state was incorporated. Settlers to the Oregon Territory planted grapes as early as the 1840s, however the production of wine has only been a significant industry in Oregon since the 1960s.

Sommer, Malkmus and Fuller were among a handful of early industry entrepreneurs. In Oregon, we fondly call them “the founders.” These folks and many others evoke a sense of pride in Oregonians. They have managed to capture national and international attention for their great wines.

We celebrate Willamette Valley wine all year round, but especially during Oregon Wine Month, when the entire state joins in commemoration of our beloved industry for the month of May, offering special activities and promotions for the enjoyment of Oregon wine!
