NC Pre-K is a free, state-funded high quality early care and education program that aims to enhance children's school readiness.

North Carolina's Pre-K Program, NC Pre-K (named More at Four from 2001 – 2011) was launched in 2001 to serve at-risk 4-year-olds with the goal of ensuring access to high quality early learning across the state.

At what age can my child start school? If the child reaches the age of five years on or before August 31st of the year he/she is presented for enrollment, the child is eligible to enroll. If his fifth birth date falls on or after September 1st, the child is not eligible to enroll.

The child must be four years old on or before August 31st of the program year. A child that meets the age requirement is eligible for NC Pre-K if the child is from a family whose gross income is at or below 75% of the State Median Income (SMI).

NC Pre-K is a free, state-funded high quality early care and education program that aims to enhance children's school readiness. The program is offered for 6 ½ hours a day for 10 months. Programs are located at public schools, private child care programs, and Head Start centers.

Although Title I allows preschool programs to serve children from birth up to age five, most North Carolina Title I preschools serve four-year-olds. Children must be age eligible by August 31 of the new school year.
