They don't want lost birds. Rescued pigeon racing survivor Clive has both a coded green racing band & a purple clip on band. Sport bands are coded with the club's name, the bird's hatch year and the bird's ID number. They are designed to record who wins, not help those lost.

Look for the owner's contact details – gently open each wing and look for an ink stamp on the topside of the wing, or on a telephone number on a separate leg ring.

By post: You need to submit a completed transfer form, duly signed by the vendor (the person from whom you are transferring the bird), and with your details completed where appropriate. You can list up to 6 rings per form, provided that all of the rings are being transferred from the same vendor.

Electronically: Log in to the automated transfer system (click on the image below), and use your loft number and the e-mail address recorded in our membership database to transfer rings out to a new owner. There are no transfer fees for using this process.

So what should you do if you find a racing pigeon in your garden? Simply give the bird some fresh water in a deep dish, along with some bird seed, crushed cornflakes, or uncooked rice or lentils (but not bread), and before too long it will resume its journey home.

Racing pigeons are often transported in specially modified trucks.

Your Region Secretary will issue you with a loft number and advise you of the names and addresses of secretaries of clubs near to you to whom you can apply for membership and who will be able to give you some help. On receipt of a current year's membership card you will also be able to obtain rings from the RPRA.
