The Paternity Acknowledgement (PA) is a document which is used to add a biological (natural) father to a child's birth record.

Per Georgia law, you can establish paternity of your child by one of the following three ways: Marry your child's mother prior to the birth. Sign a Voluntary Paternity Acknowledgment form when your child is born or shortly thereafter. Obtain a court order designating you as your child's father.

By signing this document, the parents are establishing the right of the child to certain benefits including: Two parents with whom the child can establish an emotional bond. Two parents who will share a legal responsibility to financially support the child. Two parents whose names will appear on the birth certificate.

An order of legitimation creates a father-child relationship in the eyes of the law. It allows the dad to be listed on the birth certificate. It confers the child's right to inherit from the father (and vice versa). It allows the dad to assert and enforce his visitation and custody rights.

Legitimize a Child in Georgia. Legitimizing a child born out of wedlock in Georgia requires the marriage of the child's biological parents, or by filing a petiton to legitimize the father's right to the child in superior court within the mother's residential area.
