A do-not-resuscitate order, or DNR order, is a medical order written by a doctor. It instructs health care providers not to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patient's breathing stops or if the patient's heart stops beating.

Both the physician and the patient, or the patient's representative, must agree that a DNR Order is appropriate before the physician will write a DNR Order. A DNR Order must be signed by a physician.

A patient is entitled to refuse involvement in making a DNR decision. When the patient is involved, the patient should be given all the information required to make an informed decision. The decision can also be left in the hands of their doctors if the patient decides.
