In Commonwealth services, warrant officers rank between chief petty officer and sub-lieutenant in the navy, between staff sergeant and second lieutenant in the army, and between flight sergeant and pilot officer in the air force.

Lieutenant, Junior Grade (LTJG, O2) Promotion occurs approximately two years after commissioning as an ensign. Some officers may be in schools training for their warfare or staff specialty. Others may be serving in the fleet as division officers.

In the United States Armed Forces, the ranks of warrant officer (grades W‑1 to W‑5; see NATO: WO1–WO5) are rated as officers above all non-commissioned officers, candidates, cadets, and midshipmen, but subordinate to the lowest officer grade of O‑1 (NATO: OF‑1).

Warrant Officers are eligible for promotions based on performance and time served in each rank. There are five grades of Warrant Officers. For example, after completing two years as a Warrant Officer 1 (WO1) and passing additional Warrant Officer leadership courses, you can be promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 2 (CW2).

Under the Warrant Officer Management Act (WOMA), they must have at least three years time in grade to "be considered" for promotion to the next higher grade. They must meet this prerequisite prior to the actual convening date of the board.

Warrant Officers The Warrant Officer Program is open to all enlisted Navy people with the rank of chief petty officer or above and have completed at least 12 years of naval service. Warrant officers are senior to all enlisted chief petty officers and junior to all ensigns.
