The numbers in front of the reactant and product molecules or atoms are called coefficients. They refer to the molar relationships between substances in a chemical reaction. The coefficients are used to balance the atoms in an equation. Atoms and mass are conserved in a reaction, molecules may not be.

Stoichiometry. Stoichiometry (/ˌstɔɪkiˈɒmɪtri/) is the relationships between the masses of reactants and products before, during, and following chemical reactions.

The Law of Conservation of Mass dates from Antoine Lavoisier's 1789 discovery that mass is neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions. In other words, the mass of any one element at the beginning of a reaction will equal the mass of that element at the end of the reaction.

A mass relation refers to the ratio of the mass of reactants and products to each other. In a balanced chemical equation, you can use the mole ratio to solve for mass in grams. You can use an equation to learn how to find the mass of a compound, provided you know the quantity of any participant in the reaction.

One of these is called the law of conservation of mass, which states that during a chemical reaction, the total mass of the products must be equal to the total mass of the reactants. In other words, mass cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction, but is always conserved.

Stoichiometry is exactly that. It is the quantitative relation between the number of moles (and therefore mass) of various products and reactants in a chemical reaction.

A mole ratio is the ratio between the amounts in moles of any two compounds involved in a balanced chemical reaction. The balance chemical equation provides a comparison of the ratios of the molecules necessary to complete the reaction. We cannot calculate mole ratio for an unbalanced equation.

The mass of an atom in amu is numerically the same as the mass of one mole of atoms of the element in grams. One atom of sulfur has a mass of 32.07 amu; one mole of S atoms has a mass of 32.07 g. For compounds, the molecular mass (in amu) is numerically the same as the mass of one mole of the compound in grams.
