Nonresidents and Part-Year Residents: In addition to the exemption provisions above, if you were a nonresident or part-year resident and had Iowa-source net income of less than $1,000 (see note below) you are exempt from Iowa tax.

You must file an Iowa return if... Iowa taxable income from IA 1040, line 4. Standard deduction or itemized deductions from IA 1040, line 1d not to exceed the amount included in IA 1040, line 2. Personal exemption allowed for federal purposes.

Include the IA 148 Iowa Tax Credits Schedule with the 2023 tax return on which tax credits are being claimed. This schedule is used to claim tax credits against individual income tax, fiduciary income tax, corporation income tax, franchise tax, moneys and credits tax, and insurance premium tax liabilities.

Iowa does not levy an estate tax, but Iowans may still have to pay the federal estate tax if they have enough assets. The Hawkeye State used to have an inheritance tax, but no longer does as of Jan. 1, 2025.

General rule. A fiduciary return of income must be filed if the gross income of the estate or trust for the taxable year is $600.00 or more, regardless of any tax liability.
