Both parents of a white Lab must have the genes that allow for white coloration to occur.

A lab's temperament has nothing to do with their color. Labradors, regardless of what color coat they have, are known to be sweet-natured and very calm. But if a lab acts up, this can be the result of being under-exercised or they have been incorrectly trained.

You'll need to check: their health report from a vet, including evidence of their vaccinations and flea and worming treatments. their microchipping documentation - this is a legal requirement for breeders to have had any new puppy microchipped before they go to their new home.

Silver labs aren't a recognized color with the AKC. This color originated at two kennels that also breed Weimaraners and the silver labs have traced back to these kennels.

The silver or charcoal are a result of a recessive gene that 'dilutes' the normal color. A diluted black lab becomes charcoal, brown becomes silver, and yellow becomes champagne. They can be registered as purebred labs, but they are not eligible for showing due to the color fault.

The melanophilin gene has recently been shown to be responsible, but not all of the dilute causing mutations have been identified yet. The omission of “d,” and thus the impossibility of a dd dilute gene resulting from a pure Labrador breeding, is certainly persuasive evidence that the silver Labrador is not a purebred.
