Contact support

'Early help' describes any service that supports children and families as soon as problems emerge. Examples of early help services include: Parenting support. Play and activity groups. Emotional health and wellbeing support.

The plan should be written in a language that is understandable and ownership of the plan must be given to the child and their family. Actions need to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely (SMART). It is good practice – and a way of empowering a family – to give actions to individual family members.

Early Help is not a designated team; it is the way that everyone works together to support the needs of families. The aim of Early Help is to build on people's strengths and resources to manage their own dilemmas, resolve their own difficulties and prevent further problems in the future.

Early Help is the term used by all agencies to describe North Yorkshire's approach to providing early support to families so that children, young people and their families are safe, happy and ready for school, work and life's challenges. Early Help is the right help, at the right time, in the right place.

Early Help can benefit any family experiencing difficulties, but it is particularly effective for those showing certain signs, such as children with challenging behaviour, parents struggling with relationships or families dealing with mental health, housing or financial problems.

Any service that provides support to a child, young person or family that is beyond their universal offer is classed as early help.

In England, the local early help assessment process is set out by the local safeguarding partners. The process should include the appointment of a lead practitioner for each case (such as a GP, family support worker, school nurse, teacher, health visitor, and/or special educational needs co-ordinator).

The Early Help Assessment (EHA) is a holistic assessment of a family's strengths and needs. It assists when there are concerns around progress and additional support may be required.
