It is often possible to treat hearing loss that is caused by problems in the middle ear with medicines or surgery. There is no cure for hearing loss caused by damage to the inner ear or nerves. How well your child does depends on the cause and severity of the hearing loss.

At least ten states have enacted legislation mandating some form of newborn or infant hearing screening, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.

A “Did Not Pass” or “Referral” result means your baby needs another hearing screen. This result does not mean your baby is deaf or hard of hearing. Some things that may cause a baby not to pass the first time are birth fluid in the ear, an ear infection, or a baby who is crying or active during the hearing test.

Spontaneous vernix clearance usually takes place during the first 24-48 hours after birth, but vernix in the ear canal may persist for over a month in some infants.

If your child failed a hearing screening, they should be tested by a licensed audiologist to learn more about the type and amount of hearing loss. How does an audiologist test my child for hearing loss? softest sounds that your child hears— ranging from low to high pitches.

You should ask your doctor for a hearing screening if you have concerns about your or your child's hearing. An audiologist can give you a more complete hearing test if you fail the screening. This is called an evaluation, and you should have it done as soon as possible after the failed screening.

But don't be alarmed, a failed first hearing test doesn't necessarily mean there's a permanent hearing impairment. During birth, vernix can get trapped in the ear canal or fluid can get stuck in the middle ear. In addition, movement or crying during the test can influence the results.

If your baby does not pass a hearing screening, make sure he or she is tested again as soon as possible. Most babies who need another hearing test have normal hearing, but some will have hearing loss. Why is it so important to have another hearing test as soon as possible?
