Is my AQHA or Thoroughbred eligible for APHA registration? If your registered AQHA or Jockey Club horse has at least one parent that is dual-registered with APHA, your horse is eligible for APHA registration.

During March of 1941, the association's first registered horse came in the form of a stocky and hardy ranch stallion named “Wimpy." The King Ranch stallion won the grand championship at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth, TX, also earning him the AQHA registration No. 1.

A new Appendix registry would be established for foals of registered Quarter Horses crossed with Thoroughbreds. These Appendix horses would receive a number in the new registry by attaining a Register of Merit and passing inspection for conformation after they turned 2.

Texas has an estimated 748,829 horses, about half of which are quarter horses. 30.48% of households, or 3 million people in Texas, contain horse enthusiasts.

The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Rule Book is the definitive answer, but here are a few general guidelines: The name may be derived from the foal's pedigree, but this is not required. The name can't be longer than 20 characters including spaces and numbers.

Each is suited to a different purpose and has a slightly different appearance. Stock Quarter Horses tend to be smaller and stockier; racing and hunter Quarter Horses are usually lean with longer legs; while halter Quarter Horses are large and significantly more muscular.

As a note: The only registerable outcross for a Quarter Horse is Thoroughbred, and crossing to a Paint only results in an AQHA registerable foal if the Paint parent also has AQHA papers (this is very common with the reining horses where splash patterns cause enough white for double registry).

MyAQHA is AQHA's new member portal, which will replace the existing aqha.com Member Services website, the area where AQHA members can log in and access account, ownership and transactional information.
