This is true - the total process can take half a year or longer, due to a required Security Check. But most training and many service opportunities with the Auxiliary can begin once the Application is approved - usually a month or so after the Application is submitted.

There are five courses in the Core Training curriculum that are required to be taken every five years. These courses expire at the end of the fifth calendar year.

Auxiliary C-schools are Coast Guard-funded formal training events. They are short-term in nature (i.e. – usually 2-5 days long) and deal with specific subject matter (e.g. – distance education technology, information systems, spatial disorientation).

The Auxiliary is an organization of uniformed volunteers. Membership is open to any citizen of the U.S. and its territories and possessions who is seventeen years of age or older (no mandatory maximum age) and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Association, Inc. (CGAuxA, Inc.).

Auxiliarists aren't paid with money, but with satisfaction. We furnish and maintain our own equipment and can choose to participate at a level tailored to our individual capabilities.

Some courses will be longer than others due to state or provincial requirements. The amount of chapters in a course also varies on the course you take as well as your state requirements. Typically, you can expect to spend between 4 to 8 hours to complete a traditional safety course.
