TRAC's Tenant Infoline (604-255-0546 or 1-800-665-1185) provides tenants across BC with free legal information and referral services.

If you live in BC and pay rent for your home, you are most likely protected by the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) – the provincial law that outlines tenants' and landlords' rights and responsibilities.

Landlords must provide at least four months' notice to end tenancy and tenants have 30 days from the date the notice is received to dispute the notice. These changes apply to notices to end tenancy received by a tenant, based on the date of deemed receipt, on or after July 18, 2024.

By regulation expected by summer 2024: requiring landlords to use a web portal to generate Notices to End Tenancy for personal occupancy; increasing the notice period that a landlord must give a tenant for eviction for personal use; and.

Under the Residential Tenancy Act, a tenant is entitled to quiet enjoyment of their rental unit. This includes the right to reasonable privacy and to be free from unreasonable disturbance. A landlord can't interfere, or let other occupants or employees interfere, with your right to quiet enjoyment of your unit.
