How to fill out the IRS 8814 online
The IRS 8814 form, also known as the Parents’ Election To Report Child’s Interest and Dividends, allows parents to report their child's interest and dividend income on their tax returns. This guide will help you understand each section and field of the form, ensuring that you can complete it accurately and efficiently online.
Follow the steps to fill out the IRS 8814 online successfully.
- Click the ‘Get Form’ button to obtain the IRS 8814 document and open it in the appropriate editor.
- Enter your child's name in the provided section labeled 'A' (first, initial, and last).
- Input your child's social security number in the section labeled 'B'.
- If you are attaching more than one IRS 8814 form, check the box in section 'C'.
- Proceed to Part I, where you will report your child's interest and dividends. Start with line 1a and input your child's taxable interest. If this amount differs from the amounts shown on their Forms 1099-INT and 1099-OID, refer to the instructions provided.
- In line 1b, enter your child's tax-exempt interest. Remember, this amount is not to be included in line 1a.
- For line 2a, enter your child's ordinary dividends, including any Alaska Permanent Fund dividends. If applicable, check the instructions if your child received any ordinary dividends as a nominee.
- In line 2b, enter your child's qualified dividends that were included in line 2a.
- For line 3, enter your child's capital gain distributions. If these were received as a nominee, review the instructions.
- Add the amounts from lines 1a, 2a, and 3 in line 4. Note: If the total is $2,600 or less, skip to line 13. If it's $13,000 or more, your child must file their own return.
- If line 4 is greater than $2,600, check line 5 for the base amount. Subtract this base amount from line 4 and write the result in line 6.
- If both lines 2b and 3 are zero or blank, skip lines 7 through 10. Enter 0 in line 11 and proceed to line 12. Otherwise, continue.
- For line 7, divide line 2b by line 4 and round to at least three decimal places.
- In line 8, divide line 3 by line 4 and round likewise.
- Multiply the result of line 6 by the decimals found in lines 7 and 8 for lines 9 and 10 respectively.
- Add the results from lines 9 and 10 and enter this in line 11.
- In line 12, subtract line 11 from line 6. Include this amount in your total on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8z.
- Go to Part II, where you will calculate the tax on the first $2,600 of your child's interest and dividends. Enter the relevant values in lines 13 through 15.
- Once completed, review all entries for accuracy. Save your changes, then download, print, or share the form as needed.
