Most household employers must file Schedule H and pay household employment taxes by April 18 each year.

Use Schedule H (Form 1040) to report household employment taxes if you paid cash wages to a household employee and the wages were subject to social security, Medicare, or FUTA taxes, or if you withheld federal income tax.

Your tax return must include Schedule H only if you pay any single employee at least $2,400 in the 2022 tax year, or cash wages to all household employees totaling $1,000 or more during any three-month calendar quarter during either the current or previous tax year.

File Schedule H with your Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, 1040-SS, or 1041. If you're not filing a 2022 tax return, file Schedule H by itself. Do I make a separate payment? No.

Do You Have an Employer Identification Number (EIN)? If you have household employees, you will need an EIN to file Schedule H. If you don't have an EIN, you may apply for one online by going to IRS.gov/EIN. You may also apply for an EIN by faxing or mailing Form SS-4 to the IRS.

Forms Filed Quarterly with Due Dates of April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31 (for the fourth quarter of the previous calendar year)

Annual filings. The Schedule H is an annual filing, prepared in conjunction with the employer's personal income tax return. Form 941 however, must be filed and paid every quarter. Even if there was no household payroll in a quarter, the family using a form 941 return must file every quarter.

Yes, you should file Schedule H and pay the employment tax with your 1040, as long as your payroll service is not filing the Forms 940 and 941.
