An education credit helps with the cost of higher education by reducing the amount of tax owed on your tax return. If the credit reduces your tax to less than zero, you may get a refund. There are two education credits available: the American opportunity tax credit (AOTC) and the lifetime learning credit (LLC).

Refundable tax credits are called “refundable” because if you qualify for a refundable credit and the amount of the credit is larger than the tax you owe, you will receive a refund for the difference. For example, if you owe $800 in taxes and qualify for a $1,000 refundable credit, you would receive a $200 refund.

There are two types of property tax refunds in Minnesota. One is income based and you may apply for this if your household income is less than $128,280; you owned and occupied a home in Minnesota; are filing a refund for 2021 or later; did not rent out your home; and did not use your home for business.

Minnesota is set to become the first state in the nation to roll out an advanced payment option of the Child Tax Credit beginning with tax year 2024. This option will give parents the flexibility to receive the money from the credit at intervals throughout the year instead of all at once when filing their returns.

August 2024 Minnesota offers two refundable income tax credits targeted toward lower-income individuals: the child credit and the working family credit. The two credits are intertwined—taxpayers add together the two credits, and the combined amount is phased down based on income.

Up to $1,700 per qualifying child in 2024 and 2025 is refundable with the Additional Child Tax Credit. You can find out if you're eligible for this refundable credit by completing the worksheet in IRS Form 8812.
