Under the current-year safe harbor, no estimated tax penalty is imposed on a corporation that pays, by each quarterly due date, 25 percent of the required annual payment.

The installments are due by the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the tax year. If an installment due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the installment is due on the next regular business day.

An S Corp is generally required to make estimated tax payments. Taxes must be paid for the income you receive throughout the year. You can choose to withhold these taxes (by saving an estimated amount from gross wages to pay directly to the government), or make estimated payments.

The rule is that you must pay your taxes as you go throughout the year through withholding or making estimated tax payments. If at filing time, you have not paid enough income taxes through withholding or quarterly estimated payments, you may have to pay a penalty for underpayment.

Corporations whose tax liability for the second preceding year ex- ceeds $1,000 are required to pay 25% of the tax liability for the second preceding year as a first installment of estimated tax for the current year (MFI).

Internal Revenue Service S-corporations must also make estimated tax payments for certain taxes. S-corporations should see the instructions for U.S. Income Tax Return for an S-Corporations (Form 1120S), to figure their estimated tax payments.

You retired (after reaching age 62) or became disabled during the tax year for which estimated payments were required to be made or in the preceding tax year, and your underpayment was due to reasonable cause and not willful neglect. For information on how to request a waiver, see Form 2210 Instructions PDF.

Because of pass-through taxation, the S corporation doesn't pay federal income tax on its business income the way a C corporation does. Instead, business income, deductions, losses, and other tax items flow through (or pass through) to the business owners (e.g., the shareholders).
