Composed of the chief justice and eight justices, the Supreme Court of Texas is the court of last resort for civil matters in the state. The Supreme Court is in Austin, immediately northwest of the state Capitol. Supreme Court justices are elected to staggered six-year terms in statewide elections.

Each state within the United States, plus the District of Columbia, has at least one supreme court, or court of last resort. Oklahoma and Texas both have two courts of last resort, one for civil appeals and one for criminal appeals.

There are three ways to look at court case records: Go to the courthouse and ask to look at paper case records. Go to the courthouse and look at electronic case records. If your court offers it, look at electronic case records over the internet. This is called “remote access.”

Cases from the Texas Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeals, and courts of appeals are searchable through the Texas Appeals Management and eFiling System (TAMES) Case Search. Files that are available online can be viewed for free. To access records that are not online, contact the specific court.

The Supreme Court of Texas exercises discretionary jurisdiction over the cases brought before it and can choose to accept or deny petitions to review the decisions rendered by a Texas Court of Appeals.

Judicial records are open to the public unless exempt from disclosure, and where a respondent does not raise exemptions and the special committee cannot conclude any apply the records must be released.

Cases from the Texas Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeals, and courts of appeals are searchable through the Texas Appeals Management and eFiling System (TAMES) Case Search. Files that are available online can be viewed for free. To access records that are not online, contact the specific court.

Texas Government Code, Chapter 552, gives you the right to access government records; and an officer for public information and the officer's agent may not ask why you want them. All government information is presumed to be available to the public.

Unlike every other state except Oklahoma, Texas divides its highest court into two entities. While the Texas Supreme Court resolves appeals of civil matters, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals resolves appeals of criminal cases.

This system of bifurcated appeal has the unique advantage of dividing the state's appellate caseload into more manageable burdens to be shared by two high courts, helping to speed the administration of justice. This is particularly advantageous in a state as large as Texas.
