The Texas Commission on Jail Standards is the regulatory agency for all county jails and privately operated municipal jails in the state. Our mission is to assist local governments in providing safe, secure and suitable local jail facilities through our provision of the following services.

The Texas Legislature created the Commission on Jail Standards in 1975 to implement a declared state policy that all county jail facilities conform to minimum standards of construction, maintenance and operation.

Protection from harassment and abuse and anything else that constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Protection from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
