A Request for Personnel Action (RPA) is a package of documents submitted to the Department of General Services (DGS) Office of Human Resources (OHR) Classification and Pay (C&P) Unit to initiate a personnel-related transaction. RPAs fall into two categories - recruitment and non-recruitment.

Personnel files should only include items that are related to an employee's job or employment status. Examples of items that should not be included in the personnel file are: Pre-employment records (with the exception of the application and resume) Monthly attendance transaction documents.

In some cases, an employee may simply be curious about what is contained in their file. Obtaining a copy of your personnel file is the most effective approach to learn what information your current or previous employer knows about you, as well as what information could be passed on to future employers.

Upon request, an employee has the right to inspect information about themselves in records maintained by DGS or its agents. Warning: Civil action against an agency or its agent can be taken if: The request to inspect his/her file is refused.

Under California law, employers must allow employees to inspect their own personnel records upon request. Employees can request to see their personnel files for any reason, and they do not need to give a specific reason for their request.

If you recently left your federal job, contact your former agency personnel office. If it's been more than 30 days since you left, you need to contact the Federal Records Center, http://.archives.gov/frc/. The FRC is the depository for official personnel folders of former federal service employees.
