The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred the northern half of Mexico to US control. * It is a central document in US history, as well as in Mexican history. The “Mexican cession” as it is somewhat euphemistically called, is central to the construction of the US nation.

The treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the land that makes up all or parts of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

The Treaty established the border between Texas and Mexico at the Rio Grande River and ceded over half of Mexico's northernmost lands to the United States. The peace agreement drastically changed American and Mexican claims to Texas and the Southwest and altered the lives of people living in those regions.

This treaty, signed on February 2, 1848, ended the war between the United States and Mexico. By its terms, Mexico ceded 55 percent of its territory, including the present-day states California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.

Under the terms of the treaty negotiated by Trist, Mexico ceded to the United States Upper California and New Mexico. This was known as the Mexican Cession and included present-day Arizona and New Mexico and parts of Utah, Nevada, and Colorado (see Article V of the treaty).

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, ended the Mexican War, recognized the annexation of Texas to the United States (consummated nearly three years before), ceded to the United States Upper California (the modern state of California) and nearly all of the present American Southwest between ...

After the end of the U.S.-Mexico War, the United States pledged in the treaty to respect private land holdings, including land grants made under the Spanish and Mexican governments. The land grants were made to Hispanic families who would automatically be granted U.S. citizenship in new territories gained by the U.S.

Under the treaty, Mexico also recognized the U.S. annexation of Texas, and agreed to sell California and the rest of its territory north of the Rio Grande for $15 million plus the assumption of certain damage claims.
