Get Restoring High Priority Habitats For Birds - Usda Forest Service

Abstract Introduction This paper describes a long-term habitat restoration project in the Blue Mountains ecoregion, northeast Oregon, that we initiated in May 2000. We focused our restoration activities on two habitats previously identified as being high priority for birds: quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). In the interior West, these two habitats have become heavily degraded as a result of ungulate herbivory, fire exclusion, and loggi.

Birds need essential resources for breeding, feeding, shelter, and survival, including access to food, water, and nesting sites. The size and connectivity of habitat (e.g. whether it is large and intact vs. fragmented and isolated) can dictate whether or not the habitat will meet certain birds' needs.

Habitat loss, especially removal of plants and trees which stabilize soil, increases erosion, and reduces the nutrient levels in terrestrial ecosystems. This, in turn, can decrease agricultural productivity. In turn, increasing erosion decreases water quality by increasing sediment and pollutants in rivers and streams.

For instance, habitat loss is thought to pose by far the greatest threat to birds, both directly and indirectly, however, its overall impact on bird populations is very difficult to directly assess.

Cats cause about 1 in every 1.4 bird deaths from anthropogenic causes, collisions with motor vehicles cause 1 in 16, electrocutions cause one in 594, while collisions with onshore wind turbines cause about one in every 14,000 deaths. The other way to view the problem is in a relative sense.

Grassland birds have suffered the biggest bird declines of any terrestrial biome since 1970. The eastern Great Plains are a hotspot of population loss due to habitat conversion, tree and shrub encroachment, and pesticide applications.

Quality habitat is extremely important during breeding season, when many birds nest in trees, shrubs, on the ground, or on rocks and rely on nearby resources to raise healthy young. If that habitat is destroyed or disturbed during the breeding season, nests may be lost or abandoned or productivity may be reduced.
