Phytophthora ramorum was inadvertently introduced to California forests on nursery stock and, as an invasive species, is quarantined in over 60 countries with restrictions enforced on shipments of nursery stock and other host plant materials. For an introduction and background on Sudden Oak Death/P.

The sap-feeding beetles are attracted to the fungal mats and can transport oak wilt spores to fresh wounds or to recently cut oak stumps. Once in an area, the disease spreads to nearby oak trees through interconnected (grafted) root systems, creating an expanding pocket of dead oak trees.

Phytophthora ramorum is an invasive plant pathogen that causes sudden oak death, ramorum blight, ramorum dieback, and Phytophthora canker diseases. There is no cure for the diseases caused by P. ramorum.

How does Sudden Oak Death spread? It is not currently known how the Phytophthora pathogen that causes SOD spreads from an infected to a healthy tree. Most species of Phytophthora are spread by soil, water and infected plant material. A few species are also known to be airborne.

Sudden Oak Death may take up to two years to kill its host. Once a tree has died, it becomes habitat for a number of other organisms. Ambrosia beetles feed on the wood of dead trees.

We recommend the use of PHOSPHO-jet, a systemic fungicide for treatment of Sudden Oak Death. Arborjet recommends a two pronged approach. First, do a micro-injection of PHOSPHO-jet into susceptible host trees. Then, amend the soil around the tree with humates (high quality organic matter).

Diagnosis of infected trees and proper disposal of contaminated wood and other material are essential to limiting the spread of the disease. Management options include treatment with phosphonate compounds and selective plant removal.

Sudden Oak Death is a forest disease caused by the plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. When the pathogen infects susceptible trees – such as tanoak, coast live oak, Shreve's oak, California black oak, and canyon live oak – the name Sudden Oak Death is appropriate.
