For a captain's license renewal, you need 360 days of documented sea service time within the last five years. If you do not have this sea time and are within the one-year grace period, you can take the Deck License Renewal course in lieu of that sea service requirement.

AB Special: To qualify for AB Special, you need 360 days of experience aboard a ship on the ocean or U.S. waters. AB OSV (Off-shore Supply Vessel): AB OSV requires six months of experience on an ocean or U.S. vessel.

You must have at least 720 days of sea time with 360 days out on the ocean for Near Coastal. If you have at least 720 days on the water with 360 days on the ocean or near coastal waters and 90 of those days are in the last 3 years you can qualify for a 100 ton master near coastal.

For a 25, 50, or 100-Ton Master Near Coastal captain's license, 720 days of sea time are required with 360 outside the boundary line.

What counts as sea service? Sea service is a measure of a mariner's lifetime experience on boats, whether recreational, commercial, or military. It may be counted from the day a mariner turns age 16 and accumulates over his or her lifetime.

The Coast Guard requires that you have at least 360 days on the water since you were 16 years old. 90 of those days need to be in the last three years, this is referred to as recency. One day counts as a minimum of 4 hours on the water. You cannot have more than one day within a 24-hour time period.

You have six years from the expiration date of your USCG license to renew it, either with sufficient sea days or by passing an open book exam. During this grace period, although you can renew your license as usual, you are not allowed to work with an expired license.

The USCG told us to expect an automated email within 18 business days (business days do not include weekends and public holidays) confirming receipt of your medical certificate application. If you don't receive confirmation within that time frame, the USCG recommends that you resend your medical application.
