Energized electrical work permits have three main critical elements: the request for the work to be completed (with justification) the job analysis including associated hazards. the acknowledgement and approval signatures.

Only qualified employees may work in areas containing unguarded, uninsulated energized lines or parts of equipment operating at 50 volts or more. Treat as energized. Electric lines and equipment shall be considered and treated as energized unless they have been deenergized in ance with § 1926.961.

NFPA 70E 130.2 details the Energized Electrical Work Permit (EEWP). This permit is mandatory when equipment cannot be placed into an Electrically Safe Work Condition (ESWC). The EEWP ensures that all necessary precautions and safety measures are in place before any work is performed.

In addition, all Electrically Qualified Person(s) who are working on or assisting in the project must sign the Energized Work Permit as acceptance of the permit requirements.

Under NFPA 70E, there are only two instances in which an employee can work on live parts. In these situations, a work permit must be completed and approved by an authorized person. When de-energizing would interrupt essential life support, emergency alarms or ventilation systems.

OSHA and NFPA 70E standards require that all energized circuit parts and equipment be DE- ENERGIZED before any employee works on or near them. De-energizing shall be used as the primary method of worker protection from electrical hazards.

An exemption applies if a qualified person is provided with and uses appropriate safe work practices and personal protective equipment under any of the following conditions: Testing, troubleshooting and voltage measuring. Thermography, ultrasound and visual inspections if restricted approach boundary isn't crossed.

An EEWP is now required when a person is within the limited approach boundary or interacting with equipment in a way that an arc flash is possible, even when the equipment is closed.
