"The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo is a beautiful book about love. Edward, the main character - a china bunny, goes on an incredible world-crossing journey when he is separated from his owner. Throughout his many struggles, he finds out what it means to truly love somebody.

Plot. Edward Tulane is a china rabbit given to a ten-year-old girl named Abilene by her grandmother in the 1930s. He enjoys a pleasant but vain life with his young mistress, who treats him with the utmost love and respect until an unfortunate incident finds him falling overboard while vacationing on the Queen Mary.

Once lost, Edward Tulane embarks on an extraordinary journey that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. Along the way, Edward Tulane learns to love, to lose, and to love again.

On a voyage from New York to London, Edward falls overboard and from there finds himself on an amazing journey. He travels with tramps, works as a scarecrow, comforts a dying child … and finally learns what it is to truly love.

The story uses the simplest forms of love and care to describe the power of connection, enlightening its older readers to see the ways in which love and care are always present, even if they are only observed from afar or remembered from a distant memory.

The novel contains several themes involving loss and recovery, kindness and compassion, and the journey to self-discovery. The main theme can be summarized by a quote from the book: "If you have no intention of loving or being loved, then the whole journey is pointless."

The central message, or theme, of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is that loving others and learning to love others is one of the most important parts of being alive. One is not truly alive without loving others or feeling the love of others.

The publisher's recommended age group is 7-10. I would push that age group up – 10-13 (grades 5-8). The reading level may be a bit easy for grade 8, but the themes and morals are perfect for such an age.
