Tides are channels of water moving in a particular direction in the oceans. Alternate rise and fall of water on the ocean surface is called tide.

Flood Tide – Over a period of several hours there will be a rise in sea level. High Tide – This is a stage where the water reaches its maximum level. Ebb Tide – This is a stage where sea level keeps receding over several hours. Low Tide – The Level of Seawater stops receding.

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the earth.

Because the Earth rotates through two tidal “bulges” every lunar day, coastal areas experience two high and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes. High tides occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart.

As the moon rotates around Earth, there are different types of tides that can occur, as Earth revolves around the sun. Tides can be classified into 3 groups, which are high tide and low tide, semidiurnal and diurnal tides, and spring and neap tides.

The shallowest high tides and deepest low tides are called neap tides. Neap tides occur when the gravitational forces of the sun and the moon are perpendicular to each other, resulting in the smallest difference between high and low tides.

Learning Objectives Students will explain and model forces that cause and affect tides. Students will analyze variations in tidal patterns and water levels in selected areas, and infer and discuss some conditions that may have influenced these variations.

The difference in height between the high tide and the low tide is called the tidal range.
