Changes in High School Wrestling Rules Include Allowance of Six Matches in One Day of Competition. High school wrestlers will be able to wrestle in six matches in any one day of competition beginning with the 2023-24 season. The six-match limit includes championship and consolation matches and excludes forfeits.

The duration of a wrestling match varies depending on the type of wrestling. For high school, it's typically 6 minutes. College matches are 7 minutes. Professional wrestling matches can range from a few minutes to over 30 minutes, with main events often lasting longer.

40-match rule – A wrestler will be allowed a maximum of 40 matches during the wrestling season prior to the first qualifying tournament for the State CIF wrestling championships (in most situations this would be the league wrestling tournament).

2202 MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CONTESTS (40 MATCH RULE) In dual meets, triangular, double-duals, dual meet tournaments, etc., every match in which the wrestler participates prior to the first qualifying tournament for the state CIF wrestling championships, counts as one match. Forfeits do not count toward the 40 match maximum.
