Radar level transmitters work similarly to ultrasonic sensors. The difference is that they produce electromagnetic radio microwaves instead of sound waves. Similarly, a signal is transmitted and reflected from the surface of the liquid back to the level meter, determining the level of the liquid stored in the vessel.

As the name indicates, ultrasonic sensors measure distance by using ultrasonic waves. The sensor head emits an ultrasonic wave and receives the wave reflected back from the target. Ultrasonic Sensors measure the distance to the target by measuring the time between the emission and reception.

An ultrasonic sensor emits a sound pulse in the ultrasonic range. This sound pulse propagates at the speed of sound through air (about 344 meters per second) until the sound pulse encounters an object. The sound pulse bounces off the object and is returned in reverse to the sensor where this "echo" is received.

Level transmitters provide continuous level measurements over the range of the system rather than at a single point and produce an output signal that directly correlates to the level in the vessel. The output signal generated can be used to display the depth or to actuate control functions.

Ultrasonic level transmitter has no moving parts, and it can measure level without making physical contact with the object. This typical characteristic of the transmitter is useful for measuring levels in tanks with corrosive, boiling and hazardous chemicals.

Most ultrasonic sensors are based on the principle of measuring the propagation time of sound between send and receive (proximity sensor). The barrier principle determines the distance from the sensor to the reflector (retro-reflective sensor) or to an object (through-beam sensor) in the measuring range.

Ultrasonic flow meters measure the level in a channel by transmitting a pulse of sound from the face of the sensor to the surface of the flow stream and measuring the time for the echo to return.

Ultrasonic Level Transmitters are mainly used for continuous non-contact measurement of levels in industrial storage tanks, sewage pits, diesel containers, etc. The liquid cannot contain foam, steam, smoke, etc.

It works by emitting high-frequency sound pulses across a space and then measuring the time it takes for those pulses to return as they echo off any nearby objects. The time elapsed between the initial signal and the return echo can then be used to calculate the distance between the sensor and an object.

Limitations of Ultrasonic Level Transmitter: It is not so convenient if the tank depth is high or the echo is absorbed or dispersed. The object should not be sound absorbing type. It is also unsuitable for tanks with too much smoke or high density moisture.
