EF5 tornadoes are the most violent tornadoes ing to the EF Scale. They have winds of more than 200 miles per hour and are capable of damaging or destroying even large buildings.

Based on its damage, each tornado is graded on a tornado scale called the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The scale ranges from the weakest tornadoes at EF0 to the strongest tornadoes at EF5.

A well-constructed home leveled to the ground, with debris swept clean from its foundation, is the most often-cited example of damage sufficient to earn an EF5 rating. This four-sided brick home was leveled and its debris tossed 40 yards in the Hackleburg, Alabama, EF5 tornado on April 27, 2011.

An EF5 is the most powerful tornado, causing incredible damage with winds over 200 mph. Capable of destroying schools and large shopping complexes, and causing permanent structural deformation to even 20-story buildings, EF5 tornadoes are rare.

The old scale lists an F5 tornado as wind speeds of 261–318 mph (420–512 km/h), while the new scale lists an EF5 as a tornado with winds above 200 mph (322 km/h), found to be sufficient to cause the damage previously ascribed to the F5 range of wind speeds.

The nation's last EF-5 tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20, 2013.
