In order to meet both federal certification requirements and state licensure requirements, fire alarm systems are required to be inspected, tested and maintained in ance with NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code.

(1) Smoke alarm is securely fastened to the wall or ceiling. (2) Smoke alarm shows no evidence of physical damage, paint application, or excessive grease and dirt accumulations. (3) Ventilation holes on the smoke alarm are clean and free of obstructions. (4) Smoke alarm signal sounds when the test device is operated.

There are three types of smoke alarms, ionization, photoelectric and a combination of the two which is commonly called a “dual” detector.

The four types of fire detectors are heat, optical (ionisation), photoelectric, and ionisation/photoelectric. The differences in each of these are how they detect fires, heat being from temperature, and the other three being from smoke. The best detector is the combination ionisation/photoelectric.

Test every carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm in your home once a month. It won't take more than a few minutes. Just press the test button on your alarm and after a second or two it will make a loud siren or alert. Check the batteries in your alarms every six months.

Press and hold the test button on the smoke detector. It can take a few seconds to begin, but a loud, ear-piercing siren should emanate from the smoke detector while the button is pressed. If the sound is weak or nonexistent, replace your batteries.

Three methodologies for predicting the point detector's response were adopted: 1) using built-in smoke detector sub-models from FDS, 2) applying averaged optical densities from statistics, and 3) by multiple criteria.
