The Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) assesses skills in phonemic awareness. It is one component that should be considered along with the information from the screening assessment it is being used with. The PAST is a free resource. Administration Method The PAST is administered individually by the teacher.

The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) is a tool that focuses on fundamental literacy skills. The assessment offers instruments for PreK-3, with a Spanish version available as well. PALS is the state-provided screening assessment for Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI).

Item Scoring It should be clear by now that items are scored in one of three ways: 1) Incorrect (Score = 0) 2) Correct but not automatic (Score = 1). The student responds in more than two seconds. 3) Automatic (Score = X) The student responds in two seconds or less.

Typically, phonological awarenessA group of skills related to the ability to recognize the parts of spoken words. is assessed during kindergarten and throughout first grade.

The Total Scores First, the student receives a score that indicates how many were correct and how many were automatic at the syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme levels. Second, the other side gives the highest level passed. Remember that a level is passed as correct if at least 4 out of 5 at that level are correct.

The PAST is best used with students as part of a formal reading assessment to determine a student's level of phonological awareness (i.e., syllable, onset-rime, or phoneme) and their degree of proficiency (i.e., multisensory, knowledge or automatic).

It can be successfully administered to preschool-age children. This makes it a valuable tool for assessing the development of phonological awareness in young children. Automaticity is a factor in determining a student's score.

Phonemic proficiency appears to be a critical skill needed for orthographic mapping, which is the process of encoding written words into long-term memory for later, instant retrieval. There are four forms of the test, A, B, C, and D. This allows for an assessment a few times a year to track progress.
