Senior tax credit: Maryland has a Senior Tax Credit for residents 65 and older who meet income eligibility guidelines. To qualify, your federal adjusted gross income cannot be more than $100,000 for a single filer, or more than $150,000 if you file jointly, as a surviving spouse or head of household.

Maryland Tax Changes Effective July 1, 2024 The tax rate for other tobacco products, like chewing tobacco, will increase from 53 percent to 60 percent. The tax levied on electronic smoking devices (other than vaping liquid in containers of 5 milliliters or less) will increase from 12 percent to 20 percent.

The Senior Tax Credit is available to homeowners at least 65 for whom the property is their principal residence (see the HOTC page for details); Interested homeowners must submit the Homeowners Tax Credit Application to the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT).

The State of Maryland's Homeowners Tax Credit program allows credits against a homeowner's property tax bill if the property taxes exceed a fixed percentage of the person's gross income.

To be eligible, you must claim Maryland residency for the 2024 tax year, file 2024 Maryland state income taxes, have initially incurred at least $20,000 in undergraduate and/or graduate student loan debt, and have at least $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt at the time of applying for the tax credit.

Combined gross household income cannot exceed $60,000. If all four requirements are met, the amount of tax credit due, if any, will be calculated on the basis of the gross household income for calendar year 2023.

Tax credit for Elderly Individuals and Military Retirees is available for residents who are over 65 years of age, and who either have lived in their home for at least 40 consecutive years, or those who are retired from one of the United States armed forces (a Military Retiree, including a surviving spouse).
