Although commonly referred to as a sales tax, the Arizona transaction privilege tax (TPT) is actually a tax on a vendor for the privilege of doing business in the state. Various business activities are subject to transaction privilege tax and must be licensed.

Income received by Native Americans from Indian country sources is exempt from personal income taxation. To be exempt, the taxpayer must be a member of a federally recognized tribe and must live in Indian country.

Arizona does not require registration with the state for a resale certificate.

The department created exemption certificates to document non-taxable transactions. This establishes a basis for state and city tax deductions or exemptions. “Uniform Sales and Use Tax Certificate – Multijurisdiction” - This certificate issued by the Multistate Tax Commission may only be used for resale purposes. This certificate is not acceptable for purposes of establishing entitlement to deductions under A.R.S. § 42-5009.
