The first and probably the easiest way to identify a print is to look at its edges. Most fine art printmaking techniques require ink to be transferred to a block or a plate and then run through a press. The pressure from the press will produce a characteristic rim around the edges.

Go to JumboPrint (jumboprint.tufts.edu) and log in with your Tufts username and password. You can upload print jobs on the site and release them from any JumboPrint location. Ink Thickness – You can also compare a lithograph vs. print by touch. Rub your hand lightly over an original lithograph, and the surface should feel slightly raised. Prints will always have a completely flat surface because they came from a printing press.

The first thing you should look for are plate marks. A plate mark is an indentation on the piece of paper where the printing plate has stamped the canvas. In an engraving or etching, this will be pretty pronounced – the paper will be physically indented where the plate struck the paper.

Identifying Age with Details To begin, you will want to see if there are any signs of hand printing. Such signs include printing press impressions or ink smudges. Next, you will want to look for signs of age and the type of paper used. If you hold paper up to a strong light, you may be able to find a watermark.
