Illinois residents can claim a tax credit up to $2,000 per child for qualified adoption expenses. For adoptions of children that are Illinois residents and over one year old, the tax credit can be up to $5,000.

Adult Adoption The person to be adopted is 18 years of age or older and is either related to the adopting parents or has lived with them for at least 2 years. The biological parents of the adult being adopted do not have to consent to or receive notice of this type of adoption.

Any adopted person who was born in Illinois prior to January 1, 1946, may file with the Adoption Registry a request for a noncertified copy of an original birth certificate. The registry shall provide the adoptee with an unaltered, noncertified copy of his or her original birth certificate upon receipt of the request.

In Illinois, biological father's consent is required for adoption but can be waived if the father is deemed unfit or fails to register in time. The Putative Father Registry in Illinois allows men to secure their adoption rights by registering within 30 days of a child's birth.

Traditional Adoption Placement (TAP) Program. The total fees for our TAP Program are $38,700 for new applicants and $38,100 for returning ACI applicants.

Adoption records are impounded in Illinois and are not available for public inspection.

750 Illinois Compiled Statute 50/18 (c). To obtain a certified copy of a Judgment Order of Adoption within 30 days after entry of the judgment, file a completed Certificate of Adoption with the Clerk. The Certificate of Adoption form is available from the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Room 1202.
