The assessment of basic language and learning skills (ABLLS, often pronounced "ables") is an educational tool used frequently with applied behavior analysis (ABA) to measure the basic linguistic and functional skills of an individual with developmental delays or disabilities.

ABLLS stands for the assessment of basic language and learning skills. It's an assessment, curriculum guide, and tracking program for children with language delays. It's used very commonly with children with autism and cognitive disabilities.

The ABLLSâ„¢-R provides the tools you need to assess, instruct, and monitor children with autism or other developmental disabilities. It helps you identify deficiencies in language, academic, self-help, and motor skills and then implement and evaluate intervention.

The ABLLS-R focuses on 25 skills in the areas of language, social interaction, self-help, academic, and motor skills that most typically developing children need prior to entering kindergarten.

The ABLLS-R® is scored by reviewing and assigning a number for each task item within each domain and assigning a number to each item. The score is assigned by circling the number that best represents the child's skill level at the time of the assessment.

The ABLLS-R and VB-MAPP can both be used as assessments, curricula, and skills-tracking guides. While the ABLLS-R is user-friendly and a comprehensive program where language is concerned, it is not developmentally sequenced and does not account for behavioral and sensory issues.

Each skill has a maximum score that varies from one skill to the next but the maximum score in any domain will either be a 2 or a 4. For any skill with a maximum score of 2, the learner may score 0, 1, or 2. For skills with a maximum score of 4, the child may score 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.
