If your home has a septic tank, it means that your wastewater gets treated on your property, rather than at a municipal treatment plant, which is more common in cities and suburbs. Septic tanks collect all sorts of wastewater that comes from your household, not just toilet waste.

Onsite wastewater systems are multi-stage systems that collect, treat, and disperse wastewater generated by a home or business. The wastewater is treated and discharged to the soils rather than collected and transported to a wastewater treatment plant.

Conventional OWTS consist of a septic tank and a drainfield system. Wastewater from a house or business drains into a septic tank that is buried underground. The first step in the treatment process is for the solid material in the septic tank to settle on the bottom of the tank, while oil and grease float to the top.

Standard Septic System. Low Pressure Dose System. Supplemental Treatment System.

— Sewage Sewage disposal facilities constructed prior to May 15, 1972 and that have not been modified, are considered grandfathered. If the facilities are working, there is no need for improvement. If the facilities are malfunctioning, a repair or replacement system must be installed.

Onsite sewage facilities (OSSF), also called septic systems, are wastewater systems designed to treat and dispose of effluent on the same property that produces the wastewater, in areas not served by public sewage infrastructure.

A typical septic system consists of a septic tank and a drainfield (or soil absorption field). The septic tank digests organic matter and separates floatable matter (e.g., oils and grease) and solids from the wastewater.

The tank can become full because it's clogged with sludge. When this happens, the liquid/wastewater still flows from the outflow pipe to the drainage area, but the undissolved toilet paper or waste doesn't break down. 3. An overfull tank is a common cause of sewage backup.
