The homestead credit is a property tax credit for residents of the state of Iowa who own and occupy their homestead on July 1 and for at least six months of the calendar year. It is a tax credit funded by the State of Iowa for qualifying homeowners, and is based on the first $4,850 of actual value of the homestead.

Iowans age 65+ have until July 1 to apply for a new property tax exemption included in legislation signed into law in May 2023. AARP supported this provision that allows older Iowans to apply for a property tax exemption worth $3,250 for the current assessment year that began on January 1, 2023.

Eligibility: Must be classified as agricultural real estate; cannot exceed two acres, and must be certified by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Filing Requirements: Owner must receive certification from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which must notify the assessor of eligibility.

The Homestead Credit is a tax credit funded by the State of Iowa for qualifying homeowners, and is generally based on the first $4,850 of Net Taxable Value. In the case of a Disabled Veteran Tax Credit, the value of the Homestead Credit is increased to the entire amount of the Taxable Value of the property.

For the assessment year beginning on January 1, 2023, the exemption is for $3,250 of taxable value. For assessment years beginning on or after January 1, 2024, the exemption is for $6,500 of taxable value.
