An individual or a business entity must file a fictitious business name (FBN) statement with the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office in the county where the business will be located when the name of the business does not include the owner's last name.

How to Renew. Renewing is quick and easy, complete the application online and mail it in or make an appointment. There is a $26 renewal filing fee along with a $5 fee for each additional business name/registrant. You are not required to publish your renewal in a newspaper of general circulation.

If your business name includes your legal last name, then your work is done. Any other name other than the owner's last name requires filing a Fictitious Business Name statement.

A Fictitious Business Name Statement expires five years from the date it is filed with the County Clerk. A renewal of a fictitious business name statement must be filed prior to the date of expiration if you intend to continue doing business under that name and if there are no changes from the original.

1. What is the difference between a “DBA” or “Doing Business As” and an “FBN” or “Fictitious Business Name”? They are generally different names for the same thing. DBA is the more common name, though FBN is cited in the relevant California statutes (California Business and Professions Code Section 17910, et seq.)

Failure to publish as required by law will cause your statement to expire, and will require a new statement to be filed, including the payment of ANOTHER filing fee.
