Section 8 Transfers. Vouchers are issued as a “tenant-based” subsidy which means the rental assistance is mobile and follows the family, so it may be transferred to any city or state the tenant chooses to live. This is what's meant by “portability” or “porting” your voucher.

If you want to move to another city or town with your Section 8 subsidy you should discuss your individual circumstances with your program representative as soon as you decide to move. If you have a Section 8 Voucher you can use it anywhere in the United States that has a public housing authority.

The statewide agency pays an average of $938 a month rent payment. New Jersey is also home to nearly 100 local housing authorities that offer additional vouchers for their regions.

Identify as homeless, recently homeless, in imminent risk of homelessness; or must be fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking. The wait time to receive a voucher is approximately 7 years. Important note: Applicants will receive a confirmation number when either applying, or being placed on the waiting list, depending on housing authority policy. It is important to keep that number in a safe, easy to access place.
