Can You Bring a Pet to College? Yes, you can bring a pet to college — but be aware that you'll face certain restrictions. Most dorms do not allow many common pets like cats and dogs. And many off-campus rentals also restrict the kind of pets renters can own.

MIT's graduate residences are special places where ideas are exchanged, friendships are forged, and families are embraced. With expanded availability, a variety of layout options, and unparalleled convenience, on-campus living is the ideal way to enhance your time at MIT.

Categories of Permitted Pets Fish in an aquarium (not to exceed 50 gallons) are permitted at all HUH properties except Cronkhite Graduate Center. Besides aquarium fish, as noted above, the only other pets permitted in pet-friendly apartments are: o A maximum of two domesticated pet birds.

Pets are prohibited in any undergraduate or graduate residence hall. The term “pet” includes mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Pets are not always allowed in rental properties. In particular, colleges do not usually allow pets in student accommodation (except for assistance dogs as defined in the Equality Act 2010) - please check in advance if this is a particular issue for you.

All graduate students are eligible to apply for on-campus housing if they are fully registered for the period they will be living at MIT.

All fully-registered undergraduate MIT students are guaranteed four years of consecutive on-campus housing.

MIT is the only Massachusetts college known to allow cats, which were chosen over dogs because they don't need to be walked, don't bark, and can better fend for themselves while students are in class.
