Requests for leave of absence must be submitted by undergraduate degree candidates to the University Service Center. Metropolitan College part-time and nondegree students submit them to the dean's office of Metropolitan College or the University Registrar.

The University defines a leave of absence to mean an entire cessation of academic work for a defined period. Periods of leave of absence do not count towards the time limit for the degree and are considered a suspension of normal academic requirements.

A leave of absence is a temporary leave from the university, which may be necessary during your academic career. Typically, a leave of absence is for one semester or one academic year. A leave of absence may be extended by contacting an academic advisor.

It may mean that the professor is “on leave” from teaching to fill a full-time administrative role, or that they are “on leave” teaching in another institution, with a grant or fellowship to pay for that (and usually no pay from their own university). Or it could mean that they are “out” for medical or other reasons.

To withdraw your application—or if you have questions about withdrawing your application—contact a BU Metropolitan College admissions officer at 617-353-6000 or met@bu.edu. Note that the deactivation process cannot be reversed. Once your application is deactivated, you can't use it to apply to other BU programs.

If you wish to drop a course, you should do so on the MyBU Student Portal. If you wish to request more than one change to your schedule, please submit this form once for each course. To request a non-Questrom course, please complete the Add/Drop Form and submit it to registrar@bu.edu.

A leave of absence lets students suspend their enrollment without formally withdrawing. That makes it easier to return to school later. Colleges offer leaves of absence for students facing medical or mental health issues. Students can also use a leave of absence to work and save money for school.

Many who take Leaves of Absence report the time was useful and, although it may have been a difficult decision, helped them in the long-term. While this option can be very helpful for some, not all students feel it is best to take a complete Leave of Absence.
