In areas explored by the British, the term "sound" was applied to inlets containing large islands, such as Puget Sound. It was also applied to bodies of open water not fully open to the ocean, or broadenings or mergings at the openings of inlets.

Most beaches in Puget Sound and Hood Canal are isolated from the Pacific Ocean by topography. As a result, waves in these more protected waters are generated locally by wind blowing over the irregular channels and basins of the fjord system; they receive little to no swell from the eastern Pacific.

/ˌpjuːdʒɪt ˈsaʊnd/ a strip of water that extends into the US state of Washington from the Pacific Ocean. Seattle is on its eastern shore. It has many islands and is connected to the Pacific by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. George Vancouver visited it in 1792 and named it after his assistant, Peter Puget.

Etymology. The term sound is derived from the Anglo-Saxon or Old Norse word sund, which also means "swimming". The word sund is also documented in Old Norse and Old English as meaning "gap" (or "narrow access").

In 1792, George Vancouver gave the name "Puget's Sound" to the waters south of the Tacoma Narrows, in honor of Peter Puget, a Huguenot lieutenant accompanying him on the Vancouver Expedition. This name later came to be used for the waters north of Tacoma Narrows as well.

Bays, Bights, and fjords connect to one waterbody while a sound connects to multiple water bodies. All of the landforms occur near water bodies although they differ in size, density, and shape.

The deepest point in Puget Sound at more than 280 m (920 ft) is located in the Central Basin just south of the Kingston- Edmonds ferry route.

The depth of the basins is a result of the Sound being part of the Cascadia subduction zone, where the terranes accreted at the edge of the Juan de Fuca Plate are being subducted under the North American Plate.
